This is the best resource I have read for classroom teachers wishing to better understand the effect that speech has on spelling. My sister, who is currently a pediatrician, but has her masters in Speech Pathology, recommended this book to me when I was teaching 2nd grade and coming to her with many questions about my students’ difficulties. It is very accessible for teachers and those without backgrounds in speech or linguistics.
This book is the best resource for understanding the rules, origins, and frequency of spelling patterns and rules. It is the first book I pick up when a questions arises in the classroom rooted in “Why is this word spelling this way?” Don’t ask Google. Ask Margaret!
