Beginning of the Year for Grades 4-6

Lessons Plans

• Weeks 1-2

  Teacher Resource:

  Literacy Essentials 3rd Grade Teacher Guide Semester 1

  Literacy Essentials 3rd Grade Copy Masters

  Classrooms with students who have had Literacy Essentials in K-3: “Beginning of the Year Review.” (2 weeks)

  Classrooms with students who are new to Literacy Essentials: “Older Student Adaptation Review.” (4 weeks)

  Lessons: Follow the orthography review thoroughly and completely to ensure students have a solid foundation on which to build for reading and writing.

  Use the cursive packet found in the 3rd Grade Copy Masters to review letter formation while reviewing the phonograms.

• Week 3

  Day 1: Introduce the history of English using the interactive timeline.

  Day. 2: Introduce Greek and Latin roots.

  Day 3: Begin teaching formal spelling/vocabulary lists using the Morphology Teacher Guide and English from the Roots Up.
